Medi-Cal covers full orthodontic treatment (braces) when a child has a "handicapping malocclusion" — meaning their bite is severe enough to affect their health, speech, chewing, or self-esteem. Coverage is based on a scoring system called the HLD Index, not on cosmetic preference.
If your child qualifies, the braces themselves cost you $0 out of pocket. If they don't qualify, we offer braces starting at just $87/month with $0 down.
Who Qualifies for Medi-Cal Braces?
To get braces covered by Medi-Cal in California, your child must:
- Be under 21 years old
- Have active Medi-Cal Dental (Denti-Cal) coverage
- Score 26 points or higher on the HLD (Handicapping Labio-lingual Deviation) Index, OR have a qualifying auto-approval condition
Auto-approval conditions include cleft lip/palate, craniofacial anomalies, deep impinging overbite causing tissue damage, severe traumatic overjet, and other significant developmental issues.
What Is the HLD Score?
The HLD Index is a points-based system the State of California uses to decide who needs braces medically. An orthodontist measures things like overjet, overbite, crowding, crossbite, and open bite. Each problem earns points. If the total reaches 26 or more, Medi-Cal will approve treatment.
