Braces are the most popular orthodontic treatment in Los Angeles, CA. They are an effective way to straighten crooked teeth, correct bite problems, and improve the overall appearance of your smile. Orthodontic treatment with braces consist of brackets, wires, and bands that work together to apply gentle pressure to your teeth, gradually shifting them into their proper positions.

There's a common misconception in Los Angeles that any dentist can straighten teeth. Technically, that's true — but it shouldn't be. An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has completed an additional 2-3 years of full-time, accredited residency training after dental school, focused exclusively on tooth movement, jaw growth, bite correction, and facial development.
When you see "Invisalign provider" on a website in LA, that provider may be a board-certified orthodontist — or it may be a general dentist who took a weekend Invisalign course. Both can legally offer the treatment. Only one has the diagnostic training to recognize when Invisalign is the wrong choice, when a bite problem is actually a jaw problem, when a child needs early intervention versus monitoring, or when a complex case requires a different approach altogether.
I completed a 3-year residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics — the same specialty training every legitimate orthodontist in California completes — and I'm a member of the American Association of Orthodontists. At Textbook Orthodontics, every patient is treated by me personally, from consultation through retainer delivery. You won't be handed off to an assistant or see a different doctor each visit.

After treating thousands of patients across Los Angeles County, I can tell you the difference between an okay result and an exceptional result almost always comes down to four things:
Accurate diagnosis. A 3D scan, panoramic X-ray, cephalometric analysis, and clinical exam should all happen at the consultation — not weeks later. If an office is recommending treatment without imaging, that's a red flag.
Treatment planning by the doctor, not software. Invisalign's ClinCheck software is a starting point — not a treatment plan. A skilled orthodontist modifies that software-generated plan based on biology, root position, and how teeth actually move. When patients tell me their previous treatment "didn't finish straightening" or "the bite went off," it's almost always because the doctor never customized the plan past the default software output.
Proper retention. Teeth want to move back. Without lifelong retention, even a perfect result will partially relapse. Every patient at Textbook Orthodontics receives custom retainers and clear instructions for protecting their investment.
Realistic timelines and honest pricing. If an office quotes 6 months for a complex case, or quotes a price dramatically lower than every other consultation, ask why. In orthodontics, dramatically faster usually means dramatically compromised, and dramatically cheaper usually means corners cut on training, materials, or follow-through.

Los Angeles has some of the most expensive orthodontic care in the country. The average cost of braces in LA ranges from $4,500 to $7,500, and Invisalign often runs higher. For a working family — especially one with multiple children — that's an impossible number.
I founded Textbook Orthodontics specifically to address this. We offer braces starting at $87 per month and clear aligners starting at $127 per month, with 0% interest financing and no credit checks. We accept most PPO dental insurance.
And — uncommon among private orthodontic practices in LA — we are a Medi-Cal (Denti-Cal) provider for qualifying minors with medically necessary cases, including severe deep bite, cleft palate, and handicapping malocclusion. A confident smile shouldn't be a privilege of zip code or income bracket.
-
Your first visit at any of our three Los Angeles offices — Panorama City, Hawthorne, or Whittier — is always free, and there is never any pressure to start treatment. The appointment includes:
A complete clinical exam
Digital X-rays and photographs
A 3D iTero scan of your bite
A discussion of your goals and concerns
A detailed treatment plan with all options (braces, clear braces, Invisalign, MARPE, Phase I, or whatever your case actually calls for)
An exact cost breakdown with insurance applied
Time to ask every question you have
If you choose to start treatment that day, we can typically begin same-day. If you'd rather take the plan home, get a second opinion, and decide later — that's completely fine. I'd rather you make an informed decision than a rushed one.
-
Beyond standard braces and Invisalign, we provide specialty services that many general "Invisalign providers" cannot:
MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) — for adult patients with narrow upper jaws, a treatment that historically required surgery but can now be done non-surgically by a properly trained orthodontist.
Phase I Treatment — early orthodontic intervention for children ages 7-10 with developing bite problems, where early action can prevent extractions or jaw surgery later.
TMJ Treatment — for jaw pain, clicking, popping, and dysfunction.
Pediatric Airway & Sleep Apnea Evaluation — increasingly recognized as connected to jaw development in children.
Complex Bite Correction — underbite, overbite, crossbite, and open bite, including coordination with oral surgeons when jaw surgery is indicated.
Tongue Thrust & Mouth Breathing Therapy — addressing the underlying habits that drive many alignment problems in children.
If you've been told by another office that your case is "too complex" or "needs surgery," it's worth a second opinion before you make any irreversible decisions.
-
There are excellent orthodontists across LA County, and there are practices doing rushed, undertrained work charging premium prices. When evaluating any orthodontic office — including ours — ask these questions:
Is the doctor a board-eligible or board-certified orthodontist?
How many years of post-dental-school specialty training have they completed?
Will I see the same doctor at every visit?
What imaging is included in the consultation?
Is the treatment plan customized beyond default Invisalign software?
What's the total cost, in writing, with no hidden fees?
What does retention look like, and is it included?
What's the office's policy if treatment runs longer than expected?
Are there before-and-after photos of cases similar to mine?
If an office can answer all of those clearly, you're probably in good hands. If they get vague or defensive, keep looking.

I grew up in Los Angeles, in a family of dentists, and I've been around this profession my entire life. I've watched the orthodontic landscape in LA change dramatically over the past two decades — and not always for the better.
I founded Textbook Orthodontics because I believe specialty-level orthodontic care should be available to every LA family, not just the ones who can afford Beverly Hills prices. Whether you're a parent thinking about your child's first orthodontic evaluation, a teenager who wants to straighten your smile before college, or an adult who's been putting this off for twenty years — I'd love to meet you.
The consultation is free, honest, and pressure-free. Book online, call the office nearest you, or text us if that's easier. We're here when you're ready.

Why "Textbook" Orthodontics?
Because your smile deserves textbook results — not shortcuts.
When Dr. Nathan Nourian founded this practice, he had one mission: bring textbook-quality orthodontic care to Los Angeles families at prices that actually make sense.
In dental school, "textbook" means something specific. It means the gold-standard technique. The evidence-based approach. The treatment plan that follows decades of peer-reviewed research — not whatever's fastest, cheapest to deliver, or most profitable for a corporate chain.
Today, too many LA patients are getting orthodontic shortcuts dressed up as "modern care":
General dentists offering Invisalign after a weekend course
Mail-order aligner companies treating complex cases without ever examining a patient in person
Corporate dental chains where you see a different provider every visit
"Quick" treatments that move teeth fast but compromise the bite, the roots, or the long-term result
That's not orthodontics. That's a compromise.
At Textbook Orthodontics, every treatment plan is built the way it's taught in residency — with proper diagnostic records, specialty-trained execution, and the time it actually takes to do the job right. Dr. Nourian completed a full 3-year orthodontic residency in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. He's the orthodontist you see at every single visit. And he refuses to cut corners on your bite, your facial balance, or your long-term result — even when patients ask him to rush.
The name isn't a marketing gimmick. It's a standard.
Textbook diagnosis. Textbook execution. Textbook results.
