Orthodontic Retainers at Textbook Orthodontics

At Textbook Orthodontics, we understand that maintaining the results of your orthodontic treatment is just as important as the treatment itself. Dr. Nathan Nourian, a dedicated and experienced orthodontist, leads our practice with a commitment to providing exceptional care and guidance to ensure your smile stays beautiful and healthy for a lifetime. One essential aspect of this is the use of orthodontic retainers.

Why Wearing Your Retainer is Important

After your braces are removed or your aligner treatment is complete, your teeth need time to settle into their new positions. Retainers are crucial for:

  • Maintaining Results: Retainers keep your teeth in their new, corrected positions and prevent them from shifting back to their original alignment.

  • Stabilizing the Bite: Retainers help stabilize your bite and ensure that your jaw and teeth adjust properly to their new positions.

  • Long-Term Success: Consistent retainer wear is essential for the long-term success of your orthodontic treatment. Neglecting to wear your retainer can lead to relapse and the need for further treatment.

Types of Orthodontic Retainers

At Textbook Orthodontics, we offer different types of retainers to suit your needs and preferences. These include:

  • Hawley Retainers: These traditional retainers are made of acrylic and metal wires. They are durable, adjustable, and allow for minor tooth movements.

  • Essix Retainers: Also known as clear retainers, these are made of transparent plastic and fit snugly over your teeth. They are virtually invisible and comfortable to wear.

  • Fixed Retainers: These are bonded to the back of your teeth and provide continuous support. They are ideal for patients who may struggle with compliance in wearing removable retainers.

Our Retainer Protocol

To ensure the best results, Dr. Nathan Nourian follows a specific retainer protocol:

  • First 4 Months: Wear your retainer full-time, only removing it for eating, brushing, and cleaning.

  • After 4 Months: Transition to nighttime wear, wearing your retainer every night for life. This consistent wear will help maintain your smile and prevent any shifting of your teeth.

How to Clean Your Dental Retainer

Proper care and cleaning of your retainer are essential for maintaining its condition and ensuring your oral health. Follow these steps to clean your retainer effectively:

  • Rinse with Cold Water: After removing your retainer, rinse it with cold water to remove any debris.

  • Brush with a Toothbrush: Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to gently brush your retainer. Avoid using toothpaste, as it can be abrasive and damage the retainer.

  • Use Dish Soap: Apply a small amount of mild dish soap to the toothbrush and gently scrub the retainer. This helps remove plaque and bacteria.

  • Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse your retainer thoroughly with cold water to remove any soap residue.

  • Store Properly: When not in use, store your retainer in its case to protect it from damage and keep it clean.
